How to Plant Your Own Terrarium
|
The great thing about terrariums is their versatility. They can be big
or small, open or closed, and can contain almost any kind of plant
that you want. You can create a mini-succulent microcosm
surrounded by rocks or a little forest for fairies to dance in.
Whatever world you're trying to create, though, be mindful of the light
conditions where your terrarium will end up, as well as the
atmosphere you'll be creating for your plants - you want them to
thrive so choose the perfect container so that they can.
Once you've found the perfect glass
container, add a 1" layer of rocks (we
used Aquarium Rocks, available at
your local pet store).
Next, add a layer of Hoffman Professional
Grade Horticultural Charcoal several
inches deep, depending on the size of
your container. Charcoal improves soil
drainage, helping to keep excess water
away from delicate roots.
Potting soil comes next. We here at
Buckman's LOVE Lambert All Purpose
Potting Soil for all of our pot planting
needs.
Fill your container with a layer of
potting soil deep enough for the plants
to take root but with enough space left
at the top of the container so they
have room to grow and spread out a
little.
Now you're ready to start planting!
Before setting your plants in the container, you may want to do a test
run on your work surface until you get the arrangement you want.
Once you're ready, remove any excess soil from the root system and
place your plants in the container. Sprinkle in a bit of time-release
fertilizer like Osmocote Smart-Release Flower & Vegetable Plant
Food so they get consistent, continuous nutrition.
Once planted, cover the potting soil and
surround your plants with a layer of
moss, if you'd like, and add any other
embellishments such as rock paths or
gnomes or fairy furniture to give your
terrarium that extra special, authentic
touch.
Voila! You've just planted your first terrarium! Enjoy!
